Boating, Water Skiing and Swimming in Brattleboro and Southeastern Vermont
The West and Connecticut Rivers are both safe for swimming.
On Route 30, which follows the West River, you will see cars
parked at pull outs where people have taken the day off to go
swimming. The most picturesque sites are the Dummerston covered
bridge and the Scott covered bridge.
There is a public pool at Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro. On of our favorite swimming
holes is below the Vernon Dam just south of Brattleboro. All
swimming holes are unsupervised. Use caution, the rocks are slippery!
There is great water skiing on the Connecticut River.
22 miles of quiet river from Vernon to Bellows Falls.
Boat launch areas are at the end of Old Ferry Road in
Brattleboro (off Exit 3) and just off Exit 4 in Putney.
If you don’t have a boat but would like to get out on the
water you can rent a canoe or kayak at the mouth of the West River on Putney Road in Brattleboro.
Lake Whitingham (Harriman Reservoir) is great boating and
swimming. The water level varies considerably during the
course of the year.
